SUSANNE JOHN – Biografia

Nasce nel 1956 in Germania a Karlsruhe dove cresce in una famiglia che ama immortalare il mondo con le fotocamere Kodak usa e getta precaricate con pellicola. A Monaco di Baviera segue corsi di Studi teatrali, lavora presso un Teatro Stabile e un Teatro Off come aiuto regista e acquista finalmente una macchina fotografica seria. Nel 1980 si trasferisce in Italia a Firenze che diventerà la sua patria adottiva. Segue per diversi mesi un fotografo di scena e capisce che non ama ritrarre soggetti messi in posa. Si mantiene lavorando come interprete e traduttrice prima e agente immobiliare poi ed esaurisce anche la voglia di scattare foto ad interni e arredamenti. Ama invece dedicarsi a progetti fotografici monotematici a lungo termine per realizzare serie dedicate a singoli temi ben definiti. La sua ricerca fotografica creativa spazia dal reportage convenzionale all’elaborazione digitale, dalla fotografia concettuale all’ambito della post fotografia. I suoi lavori invitano lo spettatore spesso a seguirla in mondi fantastici e surreali solo all'apparenza scollegati dalla realtà. Mondi che vogliono liberare l'immaginazione del fruitore delle immagini per esplorare temi di attualità e le proprie emozioni. In carriera Susanne John ha ottenuto primi premi, podi e riconoscimenti in Concorso di fotografia nazionali. Espone in mostre personali e collettive su scala nazionale. Fa parte del Gruppo Fotografico Il Prisma di Scandicci (FI), della F.I.A.F.- Federazione Italiana Associazioni Fotografiche, e della U.I.F.-Unione Fotoamatori Italiani. Appassionata di storia e cultura fotografica si dedica all’organizzazione di serate a tema e collabora con il Gazzettino Fotografico della U.I.F. A Dicembre 2022 è stato pubblicato il suo primo lavoro editoriale dal titolo Messe a fuoco (GoWare editore, Firenze), dedicato alla vita e all’opera di 40 donne fotografe per lo più storiche, scritto in tandem con la fotografa e storica dell’arte toscana Giovanni Sparapani con cui ha redatto anche Donne con obiettivi (GoWare editore, 2025, Firenze), che presenta le visioni autoriali di 40 donne fotografe contemporanee viventi provenienti da tutto il mondo.

SUSANNE JOHN - BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1956 in Germany in Karlsruhe she grew up in a family who adored to capture the world with small disposable Kodak cameras. In Munich she attended Theatrical Studies, worked at a permanent theater and in an OFF theater as assistant director and finally purchased a serious camera. In 1980 she moved to Italy in Florence that became her adopted homeland. She assisted a still photographer and understood she didn't like theatrical pose. She earned a living working as translator and interpreter  first and  real estate agent ending up with refusing to photograph any more internals and furniture. She loves, instead photojournalism on social events and in addition to develop monothematic digital projects with often surreal flavor, conceptual and post photography. During the years she earned several first prizes, podium and recognition in National photography competitions.  She has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions on national scale and is part of Prisma Photograpic Group of Scandicci (FI) and the FIAF-Italian Federation of Photographic Associations; she is B.F.A. one star member of the U.I.F.- Union of Italian Amateur Photographers and a member of the Cultural Association Operarte of Campi Bisenzio (FI). Being passionate about history and culture of photography she is dedicated to the organization of cultural meetings. In November 2022 got published her first editorial work entitled MESSE A FUOCO  (On Focus, goWare publisher, Florence, Italy), dedicated to the stories and work of 40 extraordinary women photographers written together with the Tuscan photographer and art historian Giovanna Sparapani with whom she is currently writing a second volume entitled DONNE CON OBIETTIVI (women with lenses and goals, go-ware publisher, approx. March 2025) that presents 50 living contemporary women photographers from all over the world.
